The new Maddox Phoria Measure from Gulden is quick and easy to use, features a large aperture, is more flexible compared to using a phoropter, is ideal for aviation and other medical exams, and is very competitively priced.

ELKINS PARK, PA  — Gulden Ophthalmics has introduced a new and improved Maddox Phoria Measure, used to detect and measure exophoria and esophoria conditions of anisophoria – which is the change in the phoria away from the primary position, typically due to horizontal ocular muscle imbalances.

Exophoria is a condition where there is a tendency for one or both eyes to drift outward. Esophoria is a condition where there is a tendency for one or, at times, both eyes to drift inward.  In these conditions the ocular muscles often fail to maintain the fusion required for binocular single vision and higher degree stereoscopic vision.  Phoria conditions may affect reading, learning, and ability to accurately view an object or target.  These conditions may also contribute to eyestrain and headaches.   Measurement of the degree of exophoria or esophoria assists the eye care professional in treating the condition with the degree of prism correction needed to overcome the phoria.

The Maddox Phoria Measure from Gulden is a rotary monocular Maddox self-contained unit. It can be used vertically or horizontally with either eye.  It combines a large 25mm aperture, a red Maddox mounted perpendicular to the handle, and a 10 PD (prisim-diopter) prism in a rotating disc.  Exophoria or esophoria show up in diopters when the patient sees a streak pass through a spot of light. Red Maddox rods are perpendicular to the handle. Therefore, when handle is vertical, Maddox rods are horizontal and the patient sees a vertical streak. When the handle is horizontal, Maddox rods are vertical and the patient sees a horizontal streak. The scale from 0 to 10 PD indicates the measure of imbalance.  If the total imbalance is greater than 10PD, a hand-held prism can be positioned in front of the opposite eye and the power is combined with that of the Phoria Measure to obtain a complete measurement.

The Maddox Phoria Measure from Gulden is extremely useful, fast, and easy in examining and treating the condition.  Examination and treatment are necessary for patient well being and essential for aviation certification testing since phoria testing and measurement is a staple of the aviation medical examination. Additionally, the Maddox Phoria Measure is very useful with small children.  It is used for testing in real space, not behind or in conjunction with a phoropter.

The Maddox Phoria Measure from Gulden is compact, lightweight, is constructed of high quality materials, and is supplied with soft case and instructions.
