The New Gulden Ophthalmics Glaucoma Eye Model
The new Glaucoma Eye Model helps the eye care professional explain and the patient visualize the mechanism of glaucoma – the condition, treatment options, and types of surgical interventions available.
NEW Glaucoma Eye Model from Gulden Greatly Assists in Eye Care Professional’s Glaucoma Explanations and Patient Understanding
New eye model is an excellent and time saving tool for teaching and demonstrating causes and treatments for glaucoma.
ELKINS PARK, PA — “Glaucoma” represents a group of eye disorders that can lead to progressive optic nerve damage, attributed in many cases due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the US – affecting nearly four million patients – and it is the leading cause of blindness for Blacks and Hispanics.
Glaucoma treatment is often best accomplished when the patient thoroughly understands the condition, the underlying causes, and the available treatment options. The new Glaucoma Eye Model helps the eye care professional explain and demonstrate the condition, the treatment, and the surgical options available when warranted.
With the new Gulden model, the eye care professional can explain the anterior chamber components of the eye, indicting the iris, cornea, Schlemm’s canal, the ciliary body, and the trabecular meshwork. The new Gulden eye model helps patients visualize in three dimensions the “angle” formed by the junction of the iris and cornea at the periphery of the anterior chamber – helping them to better understand open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma.
Using the model, the eye care professional can explain that when the trabecular network and Schlemm’s canal do not adequately drain the fluid build-up produced by the ciliary body in the eye, increased intraocular pressure and potential optic nerve damage can result. The eye model helps patients to better understand how their intraocular pressure is determined by the balance of aqueous secretion and drainage. This understanding is often an incentive for adherence to their eye drop or other medication regimen. The professional can explain and demonstrate how elevated IOP is caused by inhibited or obstructed outflow; that in open-angle glaucoma, IOP is elevated because outflow is inadequate despite an angle that appears unobstructed; and that in angle-closure glaucoma, IOP is elevated when a physical distortion of the peripheral iris or other cause mechanically blocks outflow.
The new Glaucoma Eye Model is one of many instructional and educational eye models available from Gulden. In addition to standard eye models available from stock, Gulden can design and produce custom eye models that help eye care professionals save time and increase patient understanding.
