Gulden Ophthalmics’ New Venus™ Brand Sterile Eye Conformers and Eye Spheres Now the major sterile ophthalmic line produced in the U.S.
Gulden Ophthalmics’ New Venus™ BrandSterile Eye Conformers and Eye Spheres Now the major sterile ophthalmic line produced in the U.S. When the major U.S. supplier of sterile eye conformers and eye spheres ceased supplying these items, Gulden Ophthalmics (Elkins Park, PA USA) decided to add value to its well-established line of non-sterile eye conformers and spheres by creating the new Venus™ brand line. Named after the planet Venus, which when viewed after sunset often has a yellow hue, these sterile devices are distinguished from non-sterile eye conformers and spheres by their slight yellow tinge. Ophthalmic surgeons and surgical centers will find the advantages of the Gulden sterile conformers and spheres to include: * Surgery-ready
• Very convenient, ready to use – no need to sterilize
• Yellow hue indicates “sterile”
• Saves time, effort, and costs of sterilization
• Double pouched for protection
• Each lot tracked and QC tested for sterility
• Wide range of sizes – 12 to 22 mm for spheres (in even number increments); conformers are available in three sizes: small, medium, large with and without holes
• Sterilization indicator on each pouch Gulden’s Venus Brand Sterile Eye Spheres and Conformers are precision products made of poly(methyl methacrylate) – also known as PMMA – a hard, clear lightweight, shatterproof plastic that is inert and virtually unbreakable.
Gulden’s Venus products are Gamma sterilized at doses validated by bioburden studies, and as such, are surgery-ready. Conformers may be ordered with or without holes. Eye spheres are FDA Class II products. Eye Conformers and Spheres: Brief BackgroundWhen an eye is severely damaged by trauma or disease, it may be necessary to surgically remove it. The most common procedures are evisceration (removal of the contents of the eye) or enucleation (removal of the eye itself).
Eye spheres are permanent implants that occupy the cavity that results from enucleation surgery. Conformers are temporary devices which maintain the shape of the damaged eye and prevent closure or adhesion during the healing process. When healing is complete, conformers are replaced with a prosthesis. Most hospitals sterilize by autoclave. Because non-sterile conformers and spheres cannot be sterilized by autoclave, hospitals need to send out these items for sterilization before surgery or invest in ETO or Sterrad sterilization equipment. Using non-sterile conformers and spheres, and having to sterilize them in-house or outsourced, creates staging, inventory, transportation, timing and other issues that Gulden’s sterile products eliminate.
